Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is all the rage right now, but do you really know what sustainable agriculture means? It was important to us when we started this venture to make sure that our farm would be helpful to the planet and the animals and not continue the harms that are currently being subjected to our earth and food animals. We researched various methods and had to scale them down to fit a family size farm.

The first thing you want to do is let go of the idea that you should have a designated garden area that is only used to for a garden and a designated animal area that is only used for that purpose. This type of thinking causes imbalances because nature is not ever used for one purpose only. Whatever farm animals you have, find a way to get them into your garden area at least some of the time. They will provide weed control, pest control, and natural fertilizer.

Pasture fed rabbits are put in a rabbit tractor, for a family farm you can use garden design to keep your rabbits in your garden or at least give them a run in your garden. You can do the same for your chickens. The nice part about having a suburban farm is that you don’t typically have to worry about mountain lions or bears or other large predators to your chickens and rabbits. Once your garden is established you can even allow your chickens into your garden to free range for short amounts of time. They will eat bugs and help trim your plants.

Creating a whole eco-system is the key to a sustainable vegetable garden. If you make sure that you are attracting a balance of predatory animals to feed upon your problem bugs you will not have to use pesticides. These types of methods are brought about by sustainable garden design. Plan the entire cycle of your garden before you plant, it will actually make your life easier and help save the earth.

By not planting your plants in rows but in small blocks you are mimicking nature keeping more moisture in the ground.

Keeping the big picture in mind

What can I do so that my garden helps the earth?
