About Us |
|
When gas prices started heading up and our teenage boys began consuming up to two gallons of milk a day we decided that it was time to reconsider our food options. We have seven acres in the Sierra Foothills, most of which is fairly steep. We are fortunate to have a year-round creek that runs through our property and a good, southern exposure. At this writing, we have six children ranging in ages from 22 months to 15 years old. We have eight goats, twenty-seven chickens, 5 rabbits and two baby pigs. We have a small family garden that provides us with tomatoes, zucchini, squash, carrots, beets, pumpkins, various herbs a few ears of corn, and more greens than we can possibly eat. We have a number of friends that have family farms, raise animals and have been a great resource to us. We believe in sustainable farming practices and the importance of eating locally grown foods and supporting our local farmers. As we became interested in growing our own affordable, wholesome food, I was disappointed at the lack of information to assist people in raising their own food. While our small family farm is more of homestead than a suburban farm or urban garden we have used much of our own experience to also provide information appropriate to backyard farming, suburban farming and urban gardening practices. We are dedicated to dispelling the myth that changes in our current food system must be slow and that there are limited options available to us as consumers. During the Victory Garden movement, small gardens supplied 50% of all the food in the United States. This testifies to the difference that can be made if we are but willing to make a small commitment to ourselves. There are options other than the grocery. We are here to help you become an informed consumer and a self-reliant family. Join us in our journey for a healthy and happy family that starts with healthy and happy food! |
