Raising Pigs |
|
Personally, I think that pigs are the best meat animal going for a family farm. Piglets arrive as weaners (weaned piglets) and are absolutely adorable. Pigs are very smart and behave like a smart dog. You can train them and pet them and they will follow you around. Caring for pigs is relatively easy until the last month or so before slaughter. At this point the pigs, hogs technically, are huge and not so cute and they eat a TON! Basically by the time they reach slaughter weight you are sick and tired of caring for them and ready to eat them. Hogs only take six months to reach slaughter weight which seems to be just enough time for the joys of new animal ownership to wane for our children. For me that is a perfect combination. When your hogs are ready for slaughter the easiest thing to do is call a ranch butcher. They will come out to your property and slaughter the hog, take it to their facility and cut it according to your specifications. They will make sausage, bacon, smoke your hams, de-bone your roasts, etc. whatever you like. When you pick up your meat it is vacuum sealed and frozen just like you would get at the store. Once you have tasted this meat you will never buy store bought ham again! Things to consider before raising pigs First, check your local city regulations and make sure that you are allowed to raise a pig or two in your zoning area. Second, pigs gain more and faster if they are competing for food, so it works best to raise two hogs at a time. If this is too much meat for your family consider joining with another family and raise your hogs together. |

By not planting your plants in rows but in small blocks you are mimicking nature keeping more moisture in the ground. |
