What to grow in your garden |
|
Salad greens are absolutely the best bang for your buck in a family garden. You can get a packet of mixed salad greens and once they are ready to pick, just pick the leaves you want and then they will grow back. If it starts to get hot and they try to go to seed just pick off the tops. If you can, make a hoop house and they last longer before trying to go to seed. Beets are another item that are dual purpose and not difficult to grow. As you thin them out you can use the leaves as greens in salads or cooked like spinach. Then of course you have the beets once they fill out. Tomatoes are easy and fun to grow. There are many wonderful heirloom varieties from sweet to sour. There are cherry tomatoes in a whole rainbow of colors that are as sweet as candy. Tomatoes grow up and therefore they can produce a lot of fruit in a small amount of space. Zucchini can be a little tricky. Either buy an organic plant to put in your garden or start your seeds in the house or greenhouse. If you wait too long to plant zucchini in your garden it will die back before it produces very many zucchini for you. When you plant zucchini or squash in your garden, plant them on large mounds about three feet in diameter that are well fertilized or composted. Watch for too many zucchini growing on one plant, if there are too many pick some smaller so the others will have the nutrients to grow. If you have everything in balance you will be swamped in zucchini! You can also use a mature zucchini or squash plant to help shade plants that aren’t as fond of hot weather like spinach. Remember that squash and zucchini take a lot of space to grow so it is only worth it if it is going to produce a lot of zucchini. Spinach is a nice spring plant. You can plant the seeds early and pick as often as you want spinach and it will grow right back until it gets too hot and goes to seed. Spinach grows up and close together so it produces a lot in a small amount of space. Red Sail Lettuce is a nice compact plant that produces wonderful gourmet lettuce leaves. You would be surprised at how much they produce on a head. Just pick off the larger outside leaves as you need them and the inner ones will keep growing. Unending beautiful tasty lettuce! Herbs are a must either in the house or in the garden. My personal favorites are parsley and basil. Actually, I have three different varieties of basil in my garden. Any spice that you use often should be in your garden. Hint - try farm fresh eggs scrambled with fresh mozzarella cheese, basil, and tomatoes. It is to die for! |

By not planting your plants in rows but in small blocks you are mimicking nature keeping more moisture in the ground. |
